Riddles in the Dark

So that all who read this (mainly Kris, though) can have some fun and still guess at something (that hopefully invokes some thought or careful pondering), I've decided to add some "Riddles in the Dark." Here's the first one:
What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
     Up, up it goes,
     And yet never grows?
Also, I'll give 50 bonus pts if you can name the reference ("Riddles in the Dark").

I see no one wants to try their hand at this riddle? Or try to answer where it is from?

Want help (to guess where it is from--not help to try and guess the answer)? How about some initials? Okay:

G gave this riddle to BB... and there was a lot at stake.

ok ok, this is the first one i didn't have a good guess for...but i know it now...and where it's from.

So you know where it is from... you do not have to divulge that information. Have you actually read the book?

If so, don't go looking for the answers! I was thinking of putting some more of them up... you know, for my non-classic reading friends ; )

Do you know the answer? Or did you look it up? If you didn't, don't look it up, it's fun to see if you can guess it!
